Chawna's Nonfiction

Parenting Tools & Resources for Teaching Discernment
Pricing does not include shipping or any applicable sales tax (Minnesota, Iowa).
Worlds Beyond is a list of over 500 Christian science fiction and fantasy titles. Author, series, sub-genre, and target age listed for each title. For the titles which I have personally read, I have sorted the list by my recommendation as well. Perfect for the voracious reader in this genre.
Worlds Beyond

The ABC's of Discernment provides a brief overview of the basics of discernment. For each letter of the alphabet, one principle is briefly discussed, followed by additional Scripture reading and application questions. Great for parents of young children who wish to start training them to be discerning. The format also makes this a good one-month devotional. Includes the bonus essay, "Practical Discernment."
The ABC's of Discernment

Bearing the Sword: Developing Discernment through Scripture and Story is the first part in a curriculum that teaches discernment to high school students. Covering fifteen weeks (or one semester), this material covers the need for discernment, God's definition of good, and dissection of Philippians 4:8. Four days each week teach the principles of discernment through Bible study and personal application, followed by a day of applying those principles to the film clips. Great as a supplemental Bible study or critical thinking course.

Beyond the Cover is a compilation of over 100 reviews of science fiction and fantasy novels, both Christian secular. Each review provides information about the book, an analysis of the craft (how well a book is written), an analysis of the content (what the book is about), and my general recommendations.
Beyond the Cover

Based on workshops which I've taught in the past, these brief booklets tackle specific topics pertaining to discernment and handling media, including working with secular media (The Other Side), an analysis of the qualities found in Philippians 4:8 (Guarding the Good), and a defense of why we need fiction and specifically the science-fiction/fantasy genre (Why Story?).

Preparing the Swordsman: Understanding the Personal Boundaries of Discernment is the second part in the Bearing the Sword curriculum that teaches discernment to high school students. Covering fifteen weeks (or one semester), this second section covers the effects of physical maturity, spiritual maturity, and personal limitations on our discernment.. Four days each week teach the basic principles through Bible study and personal application, followed by a day of applying those principles to the film clips. Great as a supplemental Bible study or critical thinking course.
